DIY Denim Skirt: 2 Jeans into 1 Skirt

The hubby has been transitioning his style. He has established a professional career path, and he wants his everyday style to compliment his current journey. So the hubby decided to get rid of all the unnecessary clothing he will no longer be wearing. Yay! You know I was excited to hear that. More projects for me! I knew I would be able to put this little creative mind to work. I love taking the old and making something new. So, here is another d.i.y. idea for you fashionistas who's loving the denim skirt trend. This isn't meant to be a step-by-step pictorial due to the fact that I used a purchased skirt pattern. I did adjust the measurements to accommodate the length for the high-waist look. I also took a few inches off the width of the bottom of the skirt to give it a more hourglass appearance. Below, you will see how I actually simplified the pattern pieces and measured them according to the desired look I was going for. I did not follow the instructions exactly. But, if you are a beginner, I would suggest you follow the instructions according to the purchased pattern. Keep scrolling to get the details!

What you'll need:

  • 2 pairs of old jeans (dark and light wash)

  • NewLook pattern 6312

  • Thread

  • Sewing machine

  • Seam Ripper

  • Scissors

  • Marking Chalk

  • Pins

  • Zipper

  • Iron and Ironing board

  • Measuring Tape

To create the skirt I took a dark wash jean and a light wash jean that complimented each other and cut the seam of the inner and outer leg. I only need the fabric from the pant legs, so I cut each leg of the jean.

Now it is time to cut the patterns. Read the instructions to the pattern carefully before cutting. The dark jean will be used for the front/back side pieces; and the light jean will be used for the front/back center pieces. The waistband will be cut from the light jean as well.

The final pattern pieces will consist of: 1 front center, 4 front/back sides, 2 back center, 2 front waistband, 4 back waistband.

****For the waistbands add an extra inch to the width to create a high-waist skirt.****

Use your pins to attach pattern pieces (according to instructions) before sewing.

To properly secure seams, first do a straight stitch to attach pieces. Then, do a zig zag stitch on the edge of the fabric (as seen above Pic 1) to secure pieces. Once completely stitched, iron down the stitched area (as seen above Pic 2).

Sew on waistband leaving the two back pieces unattached from each other but attached to the front waistband. Attach zipper (I will soon have a zipper tutorial post to refer to).

Don't forget to hem your skirt. Fold the bottom of the skirt twice measuring about 1/2 inch. Then, straight stitch the fold.

Now you are ready to strut in your new denim skirt! Remember to always keep God first and be beautifully you!
